Screw Gun(cordless or not your choice)

Utility Knife

Pencil

Level

Stud finder(this tool is optional but it make the job go faster)

Find Location

The most difficult aspect of installing a medicine cabinet is finding a good location in the wall. We don't want to move plumbing, electrical or ductwork in the wall so we need to find a place that is clear. Moving these mechanical systems will add major cost and /or time to your project.

There are couples ways to find out if there are any mechanical system in a given wall. If you have an unfinished basement under the bathroom, you can look to see if any wiring, plumbing or electrical run up into the wall below.

Another method to find the clear wall space is to cut a small hole in the drywall to look around. Don't cut the deeper than the drywall as you might hit the wire. The downfall with this method is repair required, if you do find something in the wall. One of the better,non-destructive methods is to use to find stud finder that has capability of location wiring and plumbing in the wall.

Once you find an open space in the wall,You can move on to the installation.

Installation

Hold the medicine cabinet in the place and trace around the insert on the wall with pencil. Be sure the cabinet is level and plumb when marking the wall. Now use your utility knife to cut the drywall along the line you just made.

Now you need to install wood studs around the opening to support the new cabinet. Starting with the sides, cuts studs the same size as the height of the opening in the wall. One at a time place each new piece into the wall and screw it to the closest existing stud. You may need couple pieces of wood to get to the drywall opening.

Once the sides in place, you can cut the top and bottom horizontal pieces of wood for the opening. Secure each piece into place with screws. Now you can use drywall screws to secure the drywall at the cut opening to the new framing you just installed.
